Soft and Creamy Pichi-Pichi Balls
Soft and Creamy Pichi-Pichi Balls

Pichi-Pichi is a very popular Filipino snack that is made of grated cassava, coconut milk and e ingredients. This is cooked by steamer.

Way back when I was a kid, there was a lady carrying a basket where she caters different snacks including PIchi-Pichi. That time, I know what time she will pass by our place and I am saving my school allowance just to have these treats. For a P5.00 (.12 USD) I can have a stick with 3 pieces of Pichi-Pichi balls, then I'm ok. But,now I'm all grown up and having big appetites I'm always looking for more.

What's great is that the ingredients in making these little fellows are quite cheap. A kilo of cassava can serve more than 10 people. But, making this is quite consuming, you need some companion as grating the cassava alone is hard, it's grating woods.

Cassava Trivia

There are artifacts showing that as early as 6,600 BC, people living in the borders of Brazil and Mexico have planted cassava for food. And, the Portugese explorers have introduced this plants throughout the world.

Nigeria is the country that supplies the most number of cassava around the globe. Southeast Asian countries like Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia also export cassava.

Cassava, just like any other root crops produces poison in order to protect themselves from pests. Cassava has this type of poison that is not poisonous to humans. But, there are actually cousins of cassava, that is sometime mistaken to it that has a toxin that is powerful and can kill humans.
